I'm Jian Yang, a seasoned CFO with 20 years of experience helping high-growth companies achieve strategic and financial success.

 

My experience as CFO, board advisor, entrepreneur, investment banker, and consultant gives me a wide range of expertise across finance, operations, HR, and strategy and allows me to stretch from high level advisory work down to the building a financial model.

 

Through it all, my philosophy is to ensure a forward looking decision driving ethos across all my work, from financial planning through to KPI development, always asking - what’s next and how do we do it better?

CASE STUDIES

Strategy

  • Structured Industrious’ first management contract as an alternative structure to traditional leases and scaled this across multiple additional deals. Management contracts helped to build long term relationships with landlords, decreased risk and long term committed liabilities, reduced upfront capital requirements all of which helped to increase speed of growth

  • Launched and owned overall strategy and P&Ls Opencare’s RCM business line, grew it from inception to ~$1.2M in ARR and positive gross margins

  • Co-led New Stand’s repositioning from a B2C retail strategy to a B2B enterprise focus with long term contracts. Grew new business 3x in 1.5 years from $1M to $4M in ARR​

Finance Function Scaling

  • Led Industrious’ financial system overhaul, including review of current accounting, payments, and receivables

  • systems and implementation of Netsuite (ERP), Concur (AP), Zuora (AR), integration with Salesforce, and

  • ongoing improvement across relevant processes

  • Established FP&A function across multiple companies including first detailed 5 year forecasts, team and company budget and budgeting process, cashflow forecasts, KPIs and ongoing business partnerships across sales, operations, and other critical functions to drive decision making

  • Built finance teams from 1 to as many as 15 across multiple companies

  • Led first time audits with Deloitte for UGE and Industrious

  • Built and integrated data and business intelligence function with finance to provide strategic and tactical

  • partnerships across all business lines

M&A / Investments

  • Led multiple tuck in acquisitions at Industrious, including deal valuation, diligence, negotiation, and post implementation planning

  • Led divestiture of a non-core business segment at Industrious

  • Led divestiture of RCM business segment at OpenCare

  • Implemented and managed investment committee process reviewing all investments in Industrious projects,

  • including activity totaling $100m+​

Fundraising

  • Co-led UGE IPO via a SPAC onto the Toronto Venture Exchange 

  • Co-led $140m+ in total equity raised across series B, series C and follow ons at Industrious, including the first institutional capital invested

  • Led $8m+ in equity in series B follow on at Opencare

  • Put in place $5m venture debt facility at Opencare

  • Established a $22m project financing facility to accelerate domestic and international development of renewable projects 

  • Audit committee chair and board member of UGE’s go-private transaction

  • Established equipment leasing facilities at Industrious and New Stand
